Shin Guards/Protectors for Deads ?

Been scraping the shins and knee a little too much when doing deads.

Any of you use knee/shin pads when doing deads ? Do they constrain the movement at
all ?
 
Never used them personally. I find my deadlift scars (on top of my NICE scar from missing a plyo box back during high school) sexy. I personally feel cheated if I DON'T leave the gym on dead day with some scrapes/blood on my shins.


That being said, however, I believe there was a pretty good thread about this same topic on here a few weeks ago. Just do a search and you should find your answer.
 
well, I'll love to still play the perennial bad ass mothafucker, but unfortunately, I have to participate in the networking game ......golfing with the VP/CEO of hedge fund/IBs and squash games with the dean/Profs and and that kind of shit. And having to explain scars and raw shins/knees isn't as much of an ice-breaker as it would be at a PL meet :p Think it'll be best for my knees in any case, since they took a beating the last time I did deads.

I'm actually moisturizing to get rid of calluses.

Did a search, and there was the same query by a chick, but no details in that thread really. So if any of you have used these guards or what not, drop me a line.
 
well, we got a baby powder suggestion in that old thread. Any one tried this ? Besides providing some lubrication (we're still talkin deads here fellas) , I don't see how its gonna help ?

Well, in my planned line of work, battle scars such as these are acceptable and understandable (by some, anyway). I can see why you'd want to minimize them though.

Sorry about the search (after I posted that I looked too), but I do remember reading something almost exactly like this a while back on here. May've been deleted or lost or something.
 
most deadlift bars dont have knurling where the bar should be rubbing your leg . look around your gym and see if theres a bar with a smmoth section on each side where the legs would rub .

They way around scraping your shins is to wear shinguards.
 
cut up some old plastic jugs for guards and put duct tape on if you dont wanna scrape um. some guys shave their legs and just use duct tape on the shins. it helps.
 
oh and Baby powder is normally used on the the thighs so that the bar slides easily up the legs at lockout. it works very well. its like hittin a patch of ice.
 
Honestly I've banged my shins good once. But I just got bad bruises. The bar wasn't textured.

It was bad form. I was attempting a weight I shouldn't have.

That's the only time I've banged my shins.
 
well, I'm no expert on regular deads. been doing SLDL a while, but not reg. so, you guys think i should be working on my form
then eh ?

PB, whatdya think ? hitting shins good thing or bad ?

i rarely hit my shins on reg deads. the bar normally hits my knees then drags up my thighs the rest of the movement. on sumos i hit my shins.

post a clip of your pull and maybe we can help ya with a form issue. you may be doing them perfect though. some guys just tear there shins up on deads.
 
i always use my old soccer shin guards; they're broken in and have taken many a beating on the field, so they're not akward to wear. but yeh, being a girl and having crazy skinned-shins is NOT attractive... gives you that "yeh, so i'm on my knees a lot" look... LOL but they work perfect, and the baby powder trick is pretty sweet too! shaving REALLY helps for the guys, (if you're into that)...show off the muscle definition too. good luck!
