I was doin 5x5 tonight with 405lb free squats. (yes I know its light and yes Pullin' its 5x5 still :) ) So, anyways should I start using a belt or knee wraps ? The thing is I had not started wearing either one yet because I felt my base and core would be stronger. Like my lower back and my knee joints, tendons and cartlidge strength would improve with the muscles...Or am I a dumbass ??? Also I do 1080lb leg press's (5x5) but should I wear them with those at all ???

If you don't need them, don't use 'em. Don't do something like that simply because the first digit in the number changed.....do it IF you need 'em.

I agree, I never use a belt or wraps for anything, even when I'm maxing out. And I've never had any back or knee problems.

i also think it depends on if you have a previous injury..if i lift w/o them i cant move the next day.

I put a belt on when i go over 400 lbs on the squat and 455 ond deads. I have never wrapped my knees, and will not unless they start screaming or i compete. IMO if the belt makes you lift more it is not a bad thing, and if it gives you more confidence that is not bad either.

I don't like to use them too much. I used to when i went heavy but now I will do my heavy squats without knee wraps and i will not use a belt until i get up to 400 and more.

i rarely use wraps but im a believer in the belt and use it for squatting and pulling . i use a lever belt and put it on from the warmups but dont latch it down till the weight goes up .

I wrap my knees for 4 plates and up. Im not there for my ego, and my quads are one one my best assets.
I'm with Dougoe. Wraps on anything over 3 plates for me. Belt will only come when I feel I have to.

Belt is essential in my opinion. If your afraid itl take work away from your core....do some more core work!

thats the thing im not convinced it does..pushing your abs out against your belt with a heavy load on your back or when pulling only helps work the abs and make them stronger since they are cushioning the low back area..

but yes i agree doing core work is essential

Unno I was thinking about getting a clip together soon. I may wait until a saturday morning to get that together....The thing is with the belt and wraps. My left knee feels vaulnerable but I dont want a crutch added to my lifts. As long as I keep my upper body straight up arched out and ass up the wait does not feel heavy on my lower back. I truley believe people could squat heavier if they had a little bit stronger lower back. Plus if I focus on keeping my head facing a little up, like looking up my body and lifst follow, They fuckin go UP.....

PB, I was wondering what your overall thoughts were in regards to belts. You have a lot of powerlifting experience and I was wondering when you decide to prescibe one for someone's workout and when not to. In my experience I have seen research showing that they do not allow the muscles to adequately work as they would if a belt was not used. However, I would really like to hear your experience on the subject. Thanks in advance.

i wear a belt on heavy work setsand maybe the last warm up or two on squats. used to i wouldnt put on my belt til i got to 585 on squats. but abut a year ago i started putting it on at 495.

in do not wear a belt on deads cept at meets or in the last few training sessions before a meet. but this could change if it is needed.

a little common sense goes a long way here guys. if you know your body it will tell you if you need a belt or not. same with wraps and a trainer.

some guys say never use a belt/wraps. thats stupid and too macho for me. some guys got their belt on when they get out of the truck.

there is no set in stone procedure for belt usage. but in general when i train new guys to the gym or a pling routine i say no belt til they put up some good numbers. now if they got an injury that calls for a belt then by all means. thats common sense.

the first thing i focus on with new guys/gals is core strength. squatting without a belt is a good way to develop core strength along with the other core movements.

this topic is debateable and an individual thing. but thats my 2ml.
