i wear a belt on heavy work setsand maybe the last warm up or two on squats. used to i wouldnt put on my belt til i got to 585 on squats. but abut a year ago i started putting it on at 495.

in do not wear a belt on deads cept at meets or in the last few training sessions before a meet. but this could change if it is needed.

a little common sense goes a long way here guys. if you know your body it will tell you if you need a belt or not. same with wraps and a trainer.

some guys say never use a belt/wraps. thats stupid and too macho for me. some guys got their belt on when they get out of the truck.

there is no set in stone procedure for belt usage. but in general when i train new guys to the gym or a pling routine i say no belt til they put up some good numbers. now if they got an injury that calls for a belt then by all means. thats common sense.

the first thing i focus on with new guys/gals is core strength. squatting without a belt is a good way to develop core strength along with the other core movements.

this topic is debateable and an individual thing. but thats my 2ml.
in my worthless ass opinion one of the main problems with useing the belt is that newbies are cinching the thing down till they are nearly cut in half and relying on the belt to stabalize their core instead of leaving the belt a little looser and pushing against the belt with their abs/core to build up pressure and stabalize them .

I definitely dont think the wraps are necessary unless you are a powerlifter going for a max single, and personally I dont like the belt either(sorry PB). I stopped using one about 8 years ago on the advice of a surgeon, as a means of avoiding a hernia. Since then I've gotten to the point where I can squat around 500lbs for reps, ass to the floor, totally raw, so it heasnt hurt my weights much. And on the brighter side, the extra work my core has to do, has resulted in a sick midsection, that I dont train other than deads and squats

i was told to start using one from a sports orthopedist after i got an umbilical hernia. it helped and it never bothered me since.

thats actually the opposite of what the surgeon told me. He explained about how the belt build up all the pressure in the abdominal area, and if you have any weak areas, then it will blow out there and you'll end up with a hernia

mine said that it would help hold in my abdominal walls for it to heal properly. i never had surgery or had the pain since.
i'm probably right. i usually am. (just kidding- i have no idea). i do know that my chiropractor, who was the chiro for the NY Jets told me to wear a belt too, but again, i don't know.

it may be different if you already had a specific injury. I already had a weak muscle in my groin, which I thought was a hernia, but he explained it would turn into one if I continued using a belt. It sucked at first as my strength dropped, but now I'm happy it turned out this way

like i said earlier there is no set in stone procedure for belt usage. its an idividual thing that requires a little common sense. if you got injuries that require you wear a belt, or in NS case dictate not to wear a belt, then by all emans follow the doctors orders.

i wear mine when its needed and dont when i dont. =0)
