Blood Pressure during squats!

I did my heavy set of squats today and on the second rep, things started getting blurry and dark. The third rep I was pretty much blind and my face felt like it was going to explode. After I racked the bar and my vision returned a little, with stars floating around, I noticed my eyes were almost completely red and my nose was bleeding. Am I doing something wrong here?? Took a good 10 minutes to recover from that set to the point I could walk in a straight line.

nah....what dougoe has a problem with is his breathing patterns while doing heavy squats. I would think that you are not breathing but holding your breath when ya push upwards..that will cause ya to have those problems...ive had em before i knew how to breath properly during sets

Yes, it is likely breath related. But nontheless blood pressure must rise to scary levels when squatting. It is likely a combo of the two.

You might be holding your breath during squats, many people do this out of reflex. Feeling a bit dizzy is normal when you are working hard. That is why many of us throw up after a good set of squats. If this happens with all of your workouts I would be concerned but during heavy squats it is quite normal.

Yep I do hold my breath. I feel like it makes my core feel stronger? I dont know... Can anyone chime in on the proper way to breath during a set of squats.

breath in on negative and breath out on press. now if you doing singles i just hold it unless its really heavy then i aint gotta clue what the fuck i am doing. =0) aol smiley face for dougy

i've heard of a guy who blew blood vessles in his forehead and eyes when doing squats at a competition....eee not the thing to hear for a guy looking to compete for the first time in january

It's called the Valsalva maneuver: Basically holding your breath while you are trying to push

I took an exercise Physiology class and the prof said that some people when lifting weights increase their BP to 400/200.

Try to focus on breathing

During heavy lifting, systemic blood pressure is increased from what is called the valsalva maneuver. It is simply the act of forceful expiration with the mouth and nose closed producing a "bearing down" on the abdomen. Most people do this during heavy lifts such as squats or deadlifts. Pressure also increases due to blood vessels being occluded by contracting muscles.
