I normally squat semi-wide...wider than shoulder width but not all out wide. Today I went to do my normal 5x5, and at parallel and below I was having some extreme pain in my hips.

It was intolerable. I brought in my stance to shoulder width, and it was still there, but bearable.

Is this just weak hip flexors?

Dunno if it's weakness in the flexors, b/c mine are pretty strong and I get the exact same pain, right hip only. I also use the semi-wide stance, and for about 2 weeks a while back, I wasn't able to even do squats or leg press because the pain was so bad, along with tendinitis in my knees. Now, the pain is still there, but not as bad, so I just nut up and fight through it.

For the 2 weeks I couldn't squat, I tried RICE, heating before any exercise, electrical stim, and nothing worked. So if you've got the same thing I did/do, then time is going to be the best medicine.

make sure you are fully stretched and warmes up before lifting. a few minutes on a bike will help to get you warm before stretching. do plenty of warm ups. this may be a sign of overtraining as well. not saying it is but just a possibilty.

sounds like it could be bursitis, which is inflamation of the fluid sack in the hip joint. I had it bad for years, when I squatted it felt like broken glass in my hips. Eventually I started taking ibuprofin before bed and in the middle of the night, for its anti-inflamatory properties, and it did the trick

It's probably not weak hip flexors because they are not very active during a squat. Where exactly do you feel the pain? Does it feel tender upon palpation?
