its a patch , learn correct form and you wont need to prop up on plates , sooner or later if you dont learn correct form you WILL hurt yourself .

make sure to widen out your grip as well..my gym doesnt have a squat bar and the rack sucks so its hard for me to grip the bar out by the plates but i do go as far as the rack lets me..just be careful ive come close to pinching off a finger or two a few times LOL

the squat racks in my new gym are like that. so after i back out i spread my hands out. all the way out. then when i rack it i pull them back in.
