Stance for Squatting??

Do you usually use a wide or narrow stance when squatting??
I used to use narrow, but then I switched to using wide stance and it felt much better. Then some guy at our gym(who thinks he knows everything) told me i was doing them wrong, that I was suppose to keep my feet close together. He just full of bs??

actually shoulder width with your toes pointing slightly outward is preferable for me. I can squat more when I go wide but going deep enough gets more difficult. Depth is definitely more important to worry about than width.

Goin deep is where it's at. I finally realized the other day I wasn't going deep enough and today ough! Almost puked leaving the gym. I lightened up the weight and took the ass to the grass and Im feeling it nice right now in my quads. I also take about shoulder width toes slightly out that seems to take a little pressure off the knees.

oh man...had the same experience, man. I was doing a nice stance squat and definitely going deep till this guy(same as yours) told me that going deep ruins your hips...and that I should just do partial squats....and yes, a lot of guys that I know in the gym only do partial squats bec of that...but i don't....

The closer the stance, the more quad involved. The wider the stance, the more hip involved.

He is full of bullshit.
I used to squat with a small stance, and it felt o.k.
Now I squat with a wide stance, and it feels great.
And you’re stronger with a wide stance too (at least, I am), I could add 15 pounds just like that.

Keep you technique perfect and there is nothing wrong with a wide stance. Just choose the chance that feels the most comfortable (squats and feeling comfortable, hmmmmm).

yep

Josh- it really depends on your goals i squat with a very wide stance but then again i dont care how big my quads are i just want to move weight

if i cared about quad size i would bring my stance in to about shoulder width and go ATF

bodybuilder - go shoulder width stance and butt to the floor.

powerlifter - go wide stance and only to parallel.

Depends on your goal. If you are building quads for size, definitely do the former and not the latter.

i am a pler and squat shoulder width and deep. your statement is way outta line. a parallel squat gets you red lighted at most meets.

how does this squat look to you?

Squatting wide and heavy will ruin your hips over time, but i am not sure you guys really no what wide is. Take a look at Mule, or Brent or chuck V those guys are figgin wide. That is why most powerlifters where briefs when they train. At least the wide stance squatter do, not all powerlifters squat wide, their is a guy named goggins who squats pretty narrow as powerlifters go and he happen to be the first one to 1100 i beleive.

Mash is somewhat narrow as well

for shits and giggles i measured my stance in the rack today as i was thinking of a new way to set up the bands..its about 42-44 inches between the heels i think i can get wider with a mono

I have come out more, but i am not going to get any wider i don't think. I don't have the flexibility for it. The sumo rack has helped me alot as i can really get out and point my toes.

you do what works..i never really thought i would squat as wide as i do
but it just feels better more natural/stronger for me

if i caould go wider i would. it gives amore stable base. but alas my old bones wont take it. :D

Not what I meant PB and you know it. Speaking on behalf of BBs here (not PLs like you), you will be hard pressed to find ANY top BB that goes farther than shoulder width. It substitutes the hips for quads in the lift - which is a BBs focus on the squats. Don't believe me, ask Tom Platz.

My point to the originator of this thread was that if he is BB'ing and is focusing on developing his quads specifically through squats (and not just trying to lift the most weight), his best gains and size will come from a narrow stance.
