Strong men out live weaker men! study claims

Well, not sure I believe this but it was still fun to read. Lets hope it is true!

Copy and paste job below

The more weight men can shift with bench presses and the leg press, the longer their life expectancy. Muscle power protects, especially against cancer, a team of Swedish and American health scientists discovered.

According to a dozen or so studies, muscle power reduces the chance of death. The stronger people are, the longer their life expectancy. The problem with the studies is that the scientists mostly tested the muscle strength of their subjects by getting them to squeeze hand grips. What’s more, hardly any of the studies included people over sixty.

The researchers tried to fill in the knowledge gap by referring to a study of nine thousand fit American males whose muscle strength had been measured by the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas in the eighties. The Cooper Clinic measured how many kilograms the men could shift with bench presses and leg presses, and used the data to divide the men into little body strength (lower), normal body strength (middle) or lots of body strength (upper). The researchers monitored the men until 2003 and noted how many of them died in that period. Most of the men did regular weight training.

The figure below shows that the men with more physical strength were at less risk of dying. Among the strong men, the chance of dying from cancer in particular was lower.

You look at relative chances. Men with high physical strength are 33 percent less likely to die of cancer than men with little physical strength.

The figures above are corrected for "physical activity, current smoking, alcohol intake, body mass index, baseline medical conditions, family history of cardiovascular disease, and cardiorespiratory fitness". So strength itself protects. Therefore it’s not the case that because strong men exercise more often they have healthier cardiovascular systems and therefore are less likely to die.

When the researchers divided up the data they saw that physical strength is a protective factor among the sixty plus group, and not among the men younger than sixty.

When the scientists divided up the group on the basis of BMI, they saw that fat men are also protected by physical strength. "These results have important implications for public health", they write. "It might be possible to reduce all causes of mortality among men by promoting regular resistance training involving the major muscle groups of the upper and lower body two or three days a week."

But weight training shouldn’t replace running or cardio training, the researchers think – you need to do both.

I'm not sure it is accurate D

Lets take a case study and analyze it

PhatBastard is old as dirt and weak as a kitten! if the above study was really true he should have been dead 15 years ago!

LOL!

In all seriousness though, great read!

Never took you one for a study pusher though :D

I'm not spongy, only did it because it seems a bit rediculous and proves my point that study's can say or prove anything they want to if you manipulate the players and variables.

It is proven that little skinny men who fast will actually out live others. What they are considering strong men isn't to the same level of the guys on forums like this. Remember we are the top 1% strength wise.

our excessive eating to build muscle will actually be a hindrance in achieving old age without some good luck along with it!

A man with the will and desire to push himself beyond the average boundries lives longer because he has the will and desire to live longer.

How simple is that?

I actually agree with this, but will add that I think an overall positive mental attitude helps with longevity as well. I suppose one could argue that those who are physically active and live healthier lifestyles are happier people anyway. So physical and mental health go hand in hand assiting in long lives.

That is as deep and profound as I choose to get this morning :)

I ve read this somewhere, though it was worded a bit differant.

Zeek, stats don t lie but statistitions do..and can skew the numbers any way they want...your right.

My number 1 problem, when I was trying to be 220 plus was eating.

Being raised in Germany, by a family who starved in the mid the 40 s, I was indoctrinated to eat till your not hungry, not till your about to puke.

My MA is 74 and can outwalk 85 percent of us...quaranteed.

I believe the vast amounts of food ingested by those who want to be the biggest guy in line at Wal mart...will in the end have a detrimental effect on longevity.

You see those 100 plus yr old Orientals..weigh like 115-125..eat rice and fish....

I accept 5 11 195-200...and in a few years..185-190..both for heart and bone reasons.

At 195 I can---
Bench 225x15 slow and correct.
Military 225 x 8
Leg press with 20 plates x 12

etc...

This will drop off.

I ll personally go with lean and moderately strong over very large and extremely powerful...in my heyday I pulled well over 600, squatted 600 ,pause benched mid 300's..198 or less geared oughtta my mind.

Now please do not take offense my VERY LARGE members.

I respect the work you do and am envious of you all.

But at 48...priorities change.

I got a 5 yr old with 27 year old mom...to keep up with.

(In all honesty though... I m in it for the PU--Y. Been a nympho since 15....and that too help s with longevity.)

I really agree with you deep down T! The older I get the more I realize the 260-270 lb bulk monster isn't healthy and in the end women really do prefer the lean ripped look anyway.

I'm not willing to do what I need to do to be both at my age. So operation zeek 240 is now in effect! If I start to waiver i will come back and read your post here :)

IM SORRY, DID YOU SAY YOUR WIFE WAS 27?? IS THAT HER IN YOUR AVI causE GOD DAMMMMNNN!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL SMOKING, YOUR A LUCKY MAN.

Too much fire in the engine makes it burn hot, and burn out sooner.

Being health and strong I believe increases many factors that will result in likely longer lifespans as well as better quality of life in that time.

But going too far results in injuries, stress on your kidneys/liver, digestive tract, etc.

It, as with many things in life, is all about balance.
