Do you think this high protein intake is needed?

beliefs are for religion, tell us why you like 1.5 and not 1.4 or 1.6

sorry if I am being picky but it seems like a lot of nutritional advice is just conjecture.

wow, getting all philisophical, I told you that you read way to much

I am sure he just uses it as a guidline

personally, I know that when I used to eat a lot more protein, I found it easier to grow.

I had to do some research on this for a class. I read a peer reviewed article on a study that was printed in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition. It was found that 1.8 grams per kilogram (NOT lb.) of bodyweight was optimal for a "strength athlete."

There was another study that found for "strength athletes," 1.4 grams/kg was better than .4 grams/kg, BUT 2.4 grams/kg was NO BETTER than 1.4 grams/kg.

For what it's worth.

actually the human body works in the opposite way. the body doesn't like too much or too little of anything. your genetics have a standard deviation that they like to work within. that is why when you drink a lot of water you just piss it out. we found that out when you take a lot of creatine then you just excrete the extra without using it. protein works in the same way. when your body senses an uptake of extra protein it will either synthesize it too fat or excrete it. there is research out there (and I don't have the articles on me right now) that protein intake should be cycled for best absorbption. example.150-175 for a week or two and then jack it up to 300-400 for 3-4 weeks and then back down.
bro im talking about whether you get sick from to much protein or you digest it and i doubt your studies were conducted on a individual running a test deca dbol cycle , what effect increased protein intake had on post menopausal women or whoever the hell they decided to test this time isnt relevant to bodybuilders/powerlifters

what gets me is all the focus on protein

what about carbs.

you can take in 60000 grams of protein aday but will not grow nearly as much without those beautiful carbs

i take in maybe 250 grams aday of protein [sometimes more] and still make strides.

if i want to lose size i cut carbs if i want to gain size i add lots of carbs, the protien is just there to preserve the muscle

hmmm, who tells you that you need to take 600000 grams of protein aday

would that be the companies selling them,, of course your bodybiulding books will tell you more is better, who supports them [companies] the list can go on and on.

not saying you dont need protein just saying you dont need IMO the mass amounts they tell you that you need.

your body will only take in so much , after that your just flushing your money down the toilet

If you are using Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) then 1.5 is good because duh, most steroids increase protein synthesis. If you are on a bulking diet the typical % of calories from protein is 40%. On the whole it is 40 40 20. If you take 40% of 4,000 calories you get 400grams of protein. I don't beleive you need that much but if you have too much carbs and you are bulking it will turn over into fat more easily and obviously you don't want higher percentage of fat because that will no doubt increase your waistline. Now if you are a powerlifter or track runner then you will undoubtedly need higher fat or higher carbs. Quoted from my ISSA Fitness the complete guide edited by Frederick C. Hatfield (Dr. Squat) "For bodybuilding or general fitness nutrition the most common and best percentage is 40/40/20. Stcik with this number and you are good to go.

House1 has a good point. I've thought that before; that supplement companies had a lot to do with the huge focus on massive protein intakes.

House hit it the nail on the head. Supplement companies benefit from outrageous amounts of protein so they can make more money. If hormones and genetics weren't the most important thing steroids would be used alot less.

I weigh 245 lbs and the most I ever get is about 250g. On many days I am between 150-200g. Maybe I would make better gains if I bumped my protein to 300g but I am still mkaing gains right now. I think house has the right approach: get a minimum amount of protein and then forget about it. Considering how expensive protein rich foods can be, my advice is to go a little lower on protein and use the money you save to buy more drugs. :)

I have 2 NLarge2 shakes a day 136 grams of protein right there. It really makes groceries cheaper.

I can eat chicken breast and lean red meat all day long including breakfast, it doesn't make me sick at all.

I try to stay 360g a day natural or not.

I stay at 300g a day, I up it when on cycle. I limit my shakes to p/w and before bed, I can't eat food before bed. When cycling I might add 1 more shake and eat every 2 hours instead of every 3, to help get the protein intake up.

Yes I'd like to see the studies no matter what but I seriously doubt that they are very useful for a bodybuilder using steroids.

I once gained 25 pounds in 3 weeks. My strength went up considerably, and people commented on my getting bigger- my waist went up an inch.
I ate a lot. I doubt I got in even 200g of protein, as most of what I ate was Korean food (I was in Korea at the time) and I was not supplementing my diet with protein shakes. LOTS of white rice. Chicken in the moring, tuna throughout the day- no protein shakes.
I ordered out for food two times a day while at work, and got in about 6 meals a day. I think overall food intake should be the target to worry about. I can't be bothered going around trying to add up the carbs or protein, I just concentrate on stuffing my face.
The problem is my eating endurance. I just couldnt keep up that level of food intake, which is why after 3 weeks I had to scale back the amounts I was eating.

I'm the other way-round, if I have a shake even an hour before bed I wake up once or twice a night to leak :(

We're all different that's for sure. If I eat an hour before bed I wake up with a bump in my throat.
