Protien powder vs whole foods

Defiance

I read all over that whole foods are much better for getting your protien than powder based drinks. My question is why? Feel free to get as deep into it as you like, I'm all about the knowledge :)

Your body can digest whole foods better and more naturally. Protein powders could contain harmful chemicals that are foreign to your body. Whole food will provide you with more energy and better results. Use protein powder sparingly (When time is of the essence) and make sure it is of good quality.

So it comes down to bioavailability and what else might be in there in addition to the protien.

Whey protein absorbs much faster than whole foods. It's great to utilize immediately post workout...aside from that I would never consume protein powder (unless your in a bind or strapped for time and you need the calories). Food is always better

Agreed. Plus, I don't find that the powders satisfy my hunger. A clean, balanced diet will take longer to digest, but that'll make you feel full, give you energy, burn calories, and help keep your metabolism where you want it.

WHY?
Because people are stupid....
IT’S FOOD!
ITS FILTERED, PURIFIED FOOD!
HIGHER IN AMINO ACIDS THEN MSOT WHOLE FOODS!!
the ONLY thing I will agree on is if all you drink is protein powder drinks then they will pass through you faster and you MIGHT not absorb as much. But if you are eating a damn 2-3 meal a day or have a handful of nuts with your protein drink then even this issue is not there.
I get 80% of my protein from drinks and have put on a good 40lb or so and lost about 15lb in fat over the last 5 years.
So it drives me CRAZY when I see people post stuff saying protein drinks should be avoided, or whole food is better. That’s not true!
They differ sure, but I would hardly call them better.

I don’t eat meat or fish so (get it from whole foods) is doable but I prefer powder for 60-80% of my daily protein.
Working well for me :-)

THis is BS if your point is a post workout recovery. You have a 15 minute anabolic wino from the time you stop working out to get protei in your blood stream to replenish the glycogen store you just used. If done correctly you can replenish up to 86% of what you just burned. THe as in recovery and growth. It will also stop catabolic effect of a heavy workout. Because Whey protein is absorbed in the stomach and not in the intestine it is the nature choice to post workout meals.

Glad you found something that works for you lol but this is def your opinion. I don't think I could find a single knowledgeable nutritionist that would advise this. I use it as a supplement in my diet...not a substitute.

Solid protein is harder to digest which is good....except post workout where whey would be a prudent choice so it absorbs quickly.

But here's some food for thought. If you ate an 8 oz rib eye 45 minutes before you worked out and your workout was an hour...why in God's name would you need protein 15 minutes after said workout. Your body is still slowly digesting the rib eye.

It seems to me that the supplement industry and some bodybuilders are perpetuating flat out myths. Carry on.

Because your body would not digest that steak for 18 hrs.

I've read five hours. You've read 18 hours. Let's assume you're right.

Most of us are eating at least 4 small meals a day, sometimes 7 or 8 meals. If we derived all of our protein from whole protein (meat) it would not be vital to consume protein immediately after a workout. Chances are you have multiple "feedings" sitting in your digestive system 24 hours a day......using your claim of 18 hour digestion.

one shake a day guys.. post workout.. that's it..

dont waste your time with anything else.. sure you could pound down 5 shake a day.. but your taking something away from yourself.. a quicker metabolism.. certain key macro and micro nutrients..

An example of whole foods > MRP's. If we go back several hundred years or even further back to Ancient Greece. The larger men who worked out NATURALLY without using supplements or powders were in incredible shape. Therefore one could say that powders are great for convenience, however whole foods are still more productive.

You need both. No way you can eat enough real food and get enough protein! Try eating 250 grams of protein from real food, you'll be eating 24/7. Get yourself a good whey isolate and try to get half your protein from real food, the other half from supps. Don't forget the BCAA's right after training and then the protein.

Most protein is fertilizer, but I've found a couple good ones.
