i think i know.

after my trip to vegas with my family i see that my wife, my brother, my father and his girlfriend are all taking laxatives so they can make some big sh*ts. i realized that the American dream is to take a laxative, make 15 pounds of sh*ts, end up with a six pack. thats what everyone really wants.

unfortunately, they take the laxative, make some liquid sh*ts and end up with the same body.

For me, the american dream is first of all a dream...But admiting than is there always something real behind each dream, i would say than a part is accomplished.

for E.U people USA been for a long time a dream by itself.

I can't believe no one has responded to this one yet. I saw it yesterday and didn't have the time...still don't today, but had to toss out a few points.

The American Dream -- was, and is, the idea of establishing a form of government where the average, every day person has the same opportunity as anyone else to make their own destiny. There are no promises of success in that dream -- only a promise that you will get the same chance as anyone else to success of fail based on the merits of your own work. Rugged individualism. Self determination. Maximum absence of coercion from the government.

The dream was that we could be "self governing". We didn't need nor desire to be ruled by a king or an aristocracy. A nation guided by the rule of law, where the law applied equally to all people regardless of economic status or social class.

Those founding principles have led to over two centuries of prosperity. People from every corner of the world have immigrated to the US with the belief that doing so would give them the best opportunity to pursue life and liberty. Those immigrants have mainly fled from countries where the governments have promised much to their people. The ideals of communism and socialism are very appealing from the lectern -- promises to feed the hungry, house the homeless, provide for the welfare of all who are lacking. In reality those systems of government force everyone to give up too much for the "common good" and everyone but the political elite end up grinding away in a life of mediocrity, their labors confiscated to feed the machine, and with little hope for any way to improve their plot in life.

In contrast, the America Dream is simply an opportunity to break free of the shackles of government and to strike out on your own. It's about hard work. Sacrifice. The American Dream is a risk, because historically there have been very few safety nets for the reckless. That's by design, because the "safety nets" inherently involve restricting someone else's freedom and confiscating someone else's labor. We used to mitigate that risk by charity. Now we subsidize the risk much more heavily at the federal level in the form of one social program after another. Doing so gives us the illusion of compassion, but it really only serves to edify the political elite who can claim "look what I have done for you". Our politicians make their careers by doing so.

The American Dream is fading. That dream of opportunity can only thrive if the elements of limited government, maximum absence of coercion from the government, and individual responsibility are once again the foundation of our values.

Wow Epic Ed, i think you were thinking about american's dream for a while now.

this answer is very exhaustive, and reflects the point of view that some very balanced columnist talking about the twentieth century and U.S. influence on the rest of the world.

One wonders why the social-political model were arrested in a simple system as the world became increasingly uncontrollable, unpredictable.

The fact that anyone can have the opportunity to rise to the top of the social scale can have terrible outcomes.

I think everything should go through education primarily to do well.

In Europe, the USA was a dream, mainly because of the supermarkets and the formidable techonologies.

but also the territory where there are nomensland in the center and largest city to the coasts
Where a redneck can have his place!

architectural structures made also dreaming the humans for decades.

Not only this, but also culture, music, clothing, cinematography, automotive, food, etc. ...

Hardrock, coca cola, superbike, jeans, leather-jacket, an image that has marked the world.

And all this does not regroue all, from the U.S. Afro-American, has been a tremendous vision of a cosmopolitan world, where the demonstration that inteligeance had no color.

the american dream should be realized already in what we have said.

if you think about politics, then, forget the honesty.

ther's no magic trick to go better in this world than play with rules of system.

my friend, we are talking everydays along about steroids and how to use it, while some guys think to make money, and both are playing with the law.

laws are voted, thought, and managed to be circumvented, and people to get fooled.

the thing to get a good guy, which think about to let people with some opportunitys, and make the jobs to be precious!

In my opinion some people take it to the extreme, and their pursue of the American Dream turns into a pursuit of material prosperity, they work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes, but have less time to enjoy their prosperity with their family.

I think we should focus more on having & investing time with Family, and less time trying to have more material things, I rather have a smaller home, car, and less money, than to sacrifice really being present and making a difference in my children's lives.
