Why do people just stop training as they get older and older...looking at a lot of the old timers from the sport many have just given up and now live normal lifes.....what gets so tuff that they quit ? Is it aches/pain/injurys/energy levels/

What will change in my body will my muscles sag/skin look wierd/strength disapear or does this only happen if you leave the sport and come back ?

I'm just trying to plan for the future just so I know what to expect, I can't ever imagine not going to the gym.

well IMO if you look at anyone who's 50+, even those who are big and ripped, they just don't look the same as when they were 35 or even 45. You can't fight the clock forever, but keep in mind that when you compare these guys to regular 50 year olds they look much better!

I think there is a lot of reasons for stopping, the biggest IMO is that they have been there and done that. After you reach your goals you sometimes want different things after. It's the journey that is fun, not the outcome.

as a guy well into his 40s i can say that not only does it get hard to stay motivated when you have done it for years but theres also the wear and tear on the joints from heavy lifting which can make it hard as hell to stay in the gym .

I don't know, but this guy looks pretty good for 84 years old to me. http://www.bobdelmonteque.com/

Bill Pearl is another one that seems to defy aging pretty well from the photos I have seen of him.

I do agree that the wear and tear on one's joints can definitely hamper lifting like they did when younger, but where there's a will, there's a way.

I imagine it just gets to a point wear other things in life become more enjoyable and important ie: family/spending time with grandkids and such. I know I will be done lifting around 45-50(expect cardio, streching, etc).

1) you don't get out of it what you put into it anymore; the training becomes tougher every year and the results are less.
2) different goals, like visiting the grandchildren.
3) realisation that everybody looks like crap at age 65 so it's okay.
4) Not hanging around with people that claim 'check out that guy's biceps' or 'check out her tits'
5) boredom
6) natural test is declining, turning you into a wuss.
7) health issues - or the fear of them - become a bigger concern

etc...

i love number 4....haha...i think I'll still be saying "check out her tits" til the day i pass.

I am well into my 40's now as well, and still train 5 days a week and cycle. i am in better shape and am larger now than ever. I will say that recovery takes me a full week for each body part even when on cycle. I also have moderate to severe joint pain from continued lifting that is being treated by a physician. I am currently on a Medrol pack for the next week (corticosteroids) for severe spine and delt inflamattion. Pain is a definite deterrent for most, but not all.

I also assume that priorities change for most as well. As many "age" they focus on children, family, career, their home, new hobbbies (golf?), etc. I continue to make training and getting freaky big a lifestyle....its no longer a choice and hasn't been for over 2 decades now. Doubt that will change, unless I am bed-ridden and in an adult diaper from too many squats!

I am 50 and have been training for over 30 years. I train more consistantly now than I did while in my 20's and 30's. I have never been married so I don't have a wife, children, and grandchildren to focus on. I am more excited about training now than ever because I seem to be learning more about how my body responds to training.

Bottom line, I never lost my passion for training like many older guys do, and I have the time to commit to training. I don't train to increase the quantity of my life, but rather the quality of my life. I heard a saying several years ago which really hit home for me, "Life should be lived like a light bulb, it should burn just as bright the moment before it burns out, as it did the very first time it was lit".

Im in my upper 30's..and I can tell you...that crazy drive I had to lift when I was younger has ebbed a bit... I still go at least twice a week..but I don't train with the insane weights I did before...and also..joint pain is a problem... pain is a great motivator...either to do something or not to do something.. I have found that MSM has helped me TREMEDOUSLY... even when my testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) does accidentally get upped for a few weeks (doh) I still don't go insane like I would of 10 years ago... I hope to continue on though well into my upper years...because I just like to do it...when Im under the weight its just me and the weight..either its gonna move or its not...that is up to me.... I chose to make it move...... its the best form of mental healing ever inveted..When your life turns to shit, via death, cheating wife or lose your job... immerse yourself in the gym and the weights...your anger and frustration are released in a positive way...and you get bigger... Truthfully... the gym saved me from a probable suicide years ago after a rather nasty incident in my life... I started back at the gym and have not looked back since...... Lift on My Iron Brother

So aslong as I don't have grandchildren and joint pain it looks like I'll keep on trucking :D...I already take massive care of my joints, I never lift real heavy to avoid injury and joint wear..infact when I moved over to lighter weights gains were much faster...I've been on MSN/cod liver oil/glucosimate for years already...I'm planning long term not short term!

im 40 . i have been lifting 4 years and see no stop in the furture unless i cant get my hands on the test , then i'm fucked , the gym is a strong part of my life , it's the number one thing that i do with my wife , we spend our off time getting bigger . she is 24 so now you know the reason for the work out's . when the lights go out they dont fuck the dollar bill , you must make your self attractive to your mate or they will split.
or find a fat lady and let the love flow , for me i like it young and strong !!

Does your wife have a younger sister??

I'm 43 and still love to lift....but shoulder pain does limit me somewhat.

I look good for my age and I like it. I can't imagine not wanting to train anymore. Wife and son didn't slow me down, they train too. I take my 11 year old to UCF's speed, agility and strength training twice a week.

Well, as you can tell there are many reasons for when people get older we just change. Hell when I was 20 I said that it would be a cold day in hell when I stop smoking pot but, yet here I am at 43 not wanting it at all.. The most I ever lifted when I was in my 20's was 315lbs Never lifted in my 30's till I lost my leg at 36 and got up over 330lbs most likely 50%bf I was not going to be FAT AND FOURTY so I started lifting heavy and hard going on three years BUT it seems soon as I leave the gym my pumps are already starting to leave me I need to work twice as hard to keep my gains so I ask myself how much longer will I go on!!!!!!! Think about it. It damn near sucks to walk into a gym and see all you young bloods looking so good...

I'm in my 40s as well and feel terrific. I do have some tendonitis and rotator cuff problems in my shoulders, but I still lift hard. I lift 4-5 times a week and run 2.5 miles 3 times weekly. If my health holds out, I plan on doing this until I die of old age.

There is many guys in my gym that are in their 70s and still lift weights. They say its their hobby and they will continue to come in until they can't walk anymore. They still love lifting and so do I.

Your skin will sag and muscles will droop whether or not you work out. Your skin will look healthier and maintain its elasticity much better if you stay fit.

I weighed almost 300 lbs on my 58th birthday two years ago. With really intense diet and excercise (no medication or diseases to slow me down thankfully) I am at 190-200 now. Started only doing treadmill and grad. to weights. But I have never worked out before and my kid's friends at school are saying, "Geez, your Dad is buffed!" lol....buffed grandpa I guess. But I never did any of this before in my life and thus the results keep encourging me to go back and lift heavier (although after 2 years, I am having motivation problems lifting...it hurts but I never ask myself if I should be training this hard at 60, I don't train any differently than a 40 year old about same weight. Learning to eat clean was very hard for me. Live in NE Texas and all foods are fried or fucked up some other way..but am learning. After the first year, I did my first ever two cyles on Test E with clomid and novla. I greatly enjoyed my libido returning to my teen age years and remember honetly thinking (sexually) during cycle, "Shit. I can do anything I did at 20 but better!" Anyway, I am prob not going to do another cycle (for me at my age, it did add weight and I trained vigorously (3-4 x week, lifting hard and treadmilling), ate clean but still seemed to put on a lot of unwanted weight. For me, at my age and prev weight, balancing building muscle and keeping a ton of weight off are too hard for me, I have decided. I am want the sexual SE back so am going to try (plus I enjoy the added RBCs for endurance, etc.) Test Prop about 150-250 divided into 3 doses a week. MD will not give me shit of course or I would just go with the Androgel for what I want it for. Take a ton of supplements and drink a ton of whey protein (I don't think we would see old guys like me with muscle without that development) Guys this has been a great exp for me (except being in San Fran working a MAJOR ER while out of any post cycle meds about 6 weeks out. Very hard to even remember who I was most of the time. Won't make that mistake again. Blew up from test conversion to estrogen and tried IM lasix but would work only until the test converted to more estrogen and lost ALL sex drive for about 6 weeks and I never have lost that before and never want to again, along with the perm damage I could have caused. Sorry, rambling because I am THRILLED to find some men near my age doing the same or similar stuff. I honestly thought I was the only guy my age taking test for cycles....can any of you point me to what is enough Test to activate and maintain libido (above normal..lol) and stay on for the rest of my life? Remember, I am 60. I figure that's 50 years at the most. Thanks

Oh, and Ive been a critical care RN for over 30 years and I used cannibis every am at 0500 on my way to work out for over 2 years and it was a real blessing. Helped me stay motivated and put me "in the zone" much quicker. I also believe that the CBNs and THC (research seems to be showing...legit research not stoners wanting to justify their exist) act in some way as a "muscle protectant". But I am 60 and know very little

Have a beer every now and then, but don't drink. And the damn cigs. But going away. Them or me. :)
